My sister Molly and I embodying the "Royal We!"
Don't ask me how this all got started, but today for some reason I got started thinking about the royal "we." Apparently, it's technically called the majestic plural (pluralis maiestatis) and was introduced in England in the late 12th c. by William Longchamp. The first time it was recorded in use was with King Henry II when he assumed the "divine right of kings" in the Investiture Controversy, using the term to mean "God and I." Today, it's more common to use the term "we" instead of the "you" to convey a sort of sense of together-ness and support.
As I was mulling over the majestic plural in my head, I couldn't help but think how desirable the idea of having a today-esque "we" is. When I think about most of the things I really want - they're people related: I crave friends to share experiences with, to discuss ideas with, to back me up, to be there for, to make (and eat) dinner with, and just to all around be with. There's something so comforting in the word "we": it embodies the idea of support.
After looking up the origin of the majestic plural, I got to thinking how much I really consider God and I as a "we." I know I've heard all of the "God is continually with us" and other wonderful promises that Lord gives us many times, but do I actually live out a "we" relationship with God in my day to day? Is it more of a my plans and actions and God's separate ones?
Just wanted to leave you all with a few thoughts on what being a "we" with God this lent season could look like:
We bring our concerns to the Lord to work out.
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." ~ Isaiah 1:18
Trusting in the Lord for things we may not understand
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. ~ Psalm 23:4
Knowing that the Lord is continually with us, even when we're trying to escape Him.
Where can I go from your spirit?
Or where can I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there;
if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
If I take the wings of the morning
and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me fast.
If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light around me become night’,
even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is as bright as the day,
for darkness is as light to you. ~ Psalm 139:7-12
