Lent: Worth the TLC

One of my new favorite personal phrases is TLC: Therapeutic Life Change. Whether it be your new years resolutions, trying to make it to the gym more frequently, or  cutting back to only 1 Diet Coke a day (ok, maybe that one's just for me), the essential point of a TLC is that you give up something to get something else better.

I would certainly not call myself a history buff on the origins of Lent, but for me, Lent signifies a time where I can focus on giving up something to get into a closer relationship with the Lord. Generally, I think the sacrifices of Lent are more emphasized; there's always talk about what you're giving up and how successful you're been. My personal goal for this Lent is not to focus so much on what I'm losing, but rather what I'm gaining:

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.
When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.
When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
~ Matthew 13:44-46

Imagine giving up everything you own for Lent! It sounds crazy when you think of it alone, but only becomes worth the sacrifice when you focus on what you're gaining in the long run: a treasured relationship with Christ.

As much as Lent can be a time where we focus on our own shortcomings before the Lord, I want to encourage you all;
Remember what you gain.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
~ Romans 8:18
