I just returned to work from Thanksgiving holiday, and it was absolutely wonderful! I guess I should be feeling refreshed and ready to get back to work, but truth be told, I am literally counting down the days until I get to go home for Christmas. When I was little, it seemed like the month of December dragged on and on, and I had to wait forever until Christmas day. I used to sneak into every closet and cabinet in the house in search of those wonderful Christmas presents because I could not wait any longer to know what “Santa” had gotten me! I knew there were some awesome presents hidden in the house for me, and I wanted to know what they were.
When I know I want something, I don’t like having to wait for it. I want it now. That same desire that made my 7 year old self dash madly about in search of presents every time my mom left the house still manifests itself in my 22 year old self.
I know that God has promised great things in my life. I’m told that time and time again! Jeremiah 29:11 says: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Our Lord, who is “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (Eph. 3:20), has amazing plans for us, and I must confess that I want to know and see those plans right now. But that’s not always how the Lord works.
Through Scripture we learn that the process of waiting is vital to our growth as Christians. God promises more than we can imagine to those who persevere and wait upon Him.
Hebrews 10:36 says: “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
Likewise, James 1:12 reads: “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”
Waiting can be so difficult. We have no idea what the future holds, and we want to see God’s plan take place right now. Yet we are encouraged to persevere, for it is through perseverance that His promises are realized.
Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.
-Psalm 27:14
