“And He was saying to them all, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.’” (Luke 9:23)
This is one of those verses that could inspire an entire book of commentary. It is jam-packed with profound truth, which perhaps we can attempt to unpack more fully another day (I encourage you to check out a little more of the passage [Luke 9:23-26]). Instead, today I just want to share one particularly salient truth that God has been teaching me as I meditate on this piece of scripture. Living as a Christian, we must exist in total dependence on the strength and grace of God, who alone has the power to provide for us in our weakness. However, I often forget that the Christian life is also a daily exercise of our will to follow Christ, who gives us the strength to do so once we make our decision. God alone can give us the power to bear our cross, but we must first decide to bend down and pick it up. Sometimes I get so discouraged that I'm so far from where I think I should be spiritually, but God reminds me to just take one step at a time by choosing each day to follow Him. I hope that this simple truth encourages you as it has encouraged me. God bless you!
