God is big enough

God's not big enough.

I don't think I would ever consciously say or think those words, and yet, the way I live my life indicates that that phrase unconsciously forms the basis of my belief system.  I pray for a job, but I don't believe it will happen without me furiously sending off resumes and applications.  I pray for restoration of my body, but I don't believe in anything but modern medicine.  I pray for family members to come to Christ, but I've resigned myself to relationships of superficiality that will never lead to a complete "letting go" into the arms of Christ.

My pastor challenged us with a New Year's sermon about believing that God IS big enough.  In fact, He is bigger than anything we could imagine.  But how, in a world of brokenness, can I believe that?

I'm brought back to a list of God's known attributes:  He is eternal, holy, unchanging, impassable, infinite, all-powerful, everywhere, all-wise, all-knowing, unified, self-existent, self-sufficient, immaterial, good, love, gracious, merciful, just, sovereign, free, and jealous.  If He truly is all of these things, how can I not believe that He is big enough?

What if we lived life truly believing that every prayer we whispered in the dead of night would be answered by this great God?  What if 2013 was the year we lived radically dependent on Him for every speck of provision, every ounce of grace?  What if we relied on Him for the transformation of our city, for an end to the brokenness and violence of our nation's capital, for a complete overhaul of racism, of poverty, of our education system?  What if we believed that He alone could bring about a complete revival of our political leaders, if only we pray?

2013 is our year to PRAY.  To pray hard, to pray without ceasing, to pray about everything, seemingly significant or not.  This is the year to EXPECT prayers to be answered.  To harness the power of prayer, our ability to talk directly to the creator of the universe, to take part in the unbelievable redemption of ourselves, our families, our friends, our coworkers, our schools, our churches, our cities, our worlds.

Won't you pray with me?  I can't wait to see GREAT things happen!
