Labor of Love

Today, I went on my first outdoor run of spring. One of my absolute favorite parts about living in Philadelphia is the Schuykill river trail. It's wonderful all times of year being able to get a little bit out of the city and enjoy some fresh air, but it's especially lovely this time of year when the trail is dotted by all sorts of trees in bloom (see above). How could you not love that?

While I've been walking around Philly enjoying the early spring this year (granted, on the way to the library, but still!), this verse just keeps popping in my mind:

Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
~ Luke 12:27-31

As I go through the bustle and business of my day, it's so easy to get caught up in my to-do list and own worries. I start seeing tasks as things I need to work for on my own - without the help of the Lord. I love how this verse highlights how God provides for his creation regardless of it's efforts - I don't know about you, but I don't see too many trees working their hardest to try to bloom for spring.

For me, spring and its trappings serve as a physical reminder of the Lord's steadfast provision for us regardless of our own efforts. As much as we may labor to achieve our goals - be it nice clothes, approval of others, or success - our efforts do not produce better than what the Lord in His grace gives us. The Lord promises to provide for us not through our own labor, but rather through His labor of love for us. It constantly amazes me that the Lord provides not only our needs, but abundant blessings beyond what we ask or deserve. The Lord's generous provision ultimately points away from our own work towards Him, and toward the work He did and continues to do for us. We truly do have a Lord that loves us generously and completely!
