Radical Resolutions

Over break, I read Radical by David Platt at the recommendation of my med school mentor (she is absolutely wonderful!). The book basically talks about how the American church is very comfortable with only serving America, often failing to reach out to all of the nations as we are called to do. It's a very (personally) challenging read, but I would highly recommend it!

As everyone's thinking about resolutions this time of year, I thought I'd talk a little bit about the resolutions that this book suggests we all take to make our faith more outward focused on the world around us:
  1. Read through the Bible in a year
  2. Pray for the world
  3. Join a growing faith community
  4. Financially invest in a ministry that is doing God's work in the world
  5. Spend some time (I think it suggests a week) in an environment other than your own serving the Lord

When we're thinking about things we want to change this, do we focus on growing closer to the Lord, or on other things? Other resolutions can certainly be great, don't get me wrong, but what I really liked about this list is that it focuses on getting back to the basics, a reminder that I always need. So if you're still mulling over resolutions, think about trying these (I am, with some minor tweaks!). If resolutions isn't your thing, think about getting a mantra!

Hear's to 2012 as being a year of getting back to the basics!

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
