Send me your light and your faithful care,
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to the place where you dwell.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God, my joy and my delight. - Psalm 43:3-4
When I think of the second part of the phrase, The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever, my first thought is the word delight. It reminds me of the look you often see on little kids' faces when they experience something new that they love or receive their favorite treat - it's pure and utter joy. While following the Lord can be a daunting task sometimes, it should also be something we enjoy and delight in.
Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law
and obey it with all my heart.
Direct me in the path of your commands,
for there I find delight.
Turn my heart toward your statutes
and not toward selfish gain. - Psalm 119: 34-36
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,
rejoicing in his whole world
and delighting in mankind. - Proverbs 8:30-31
To me, these two verses suggest that we should delight in the Lord's guidance over our lives and His active presence in our lives. I love also how in the first book, the psalmist prays for the Lord to turn his heart towards the Lord's commands - while sometimes we may not feel like we delight in the Lord's presence, the Lord can and will draw our hearts to this place if we ask Him for it. For me, the main thing about delighting in the Lord is that it takes time - time to focus on His presence and meditate on His commands. I pray that today we set aside some time to delight in the presence and guidance of Christ!
